An Improvisation
One of the things I’ve always admired about jazz musicians is their ability to treat improvisation as a serious practice instead of something purely called forth by whim—which for me, in writing, I interpret as revision—seeing something again. And in that way, I’ve been thinking how this poem from my first book is an improvisation on the motif of the company we need to stay alive.




“Knowing how the stories we carry sometimes open wide enough for anyone to fall through”… being attentive is key of course, but this reminds me to be open minded and to empathize with those who, at first glance, may not be in our “lane”. The human condition transcends background, time, and place.
