Happy Mother's Day to you, too, and your mother wherever she may be. She sounded like my mother who'd been a copywriter but gave it up to pursue my mad father, who killed himself, when I was fifteen. ME as we called her reads better on the page than as a mother in real life which reminded me of my own unguarded childhood that I, too, have written about. Oh, and my father died in 1974 so we have that time period in common. And lots and lots of books. While I could have done without my mother's neglect I couldn't have done without her literate library and love of language; language saved my life. Loved both poems. You could have followed Rilke easily. That line ...who is the dog, really also reminds me of my mother who loved dogs and said that some dogs weren't dogs but people in dog suits. Maybe it's why I'm a cat person? because of her putting her dogs first? Who knows. I am sorry about the dog diet trials. We adopted a cat from Greece 4 years ago who was a starved kitten when we found her & all she wants to do is EAT. She's a very strange cat who sits up at the dinner table with her back against the chair like a person. I think it's because she knows it's charming and may garner a treat. Animals are so beyond people I think. They make the world tolerable. 🐕🦺🕶️🌷⚜
Thank you, Michael! So sad, can't find Wright's translation at this point for less than a zillion dollars... I've tried more than once over a couple of years! Kiss the puppy – hope she eats! xox
Thank you!!
I'm just beginning to catch up on these gifts. I'm so glad I am. What a lovely way to spend this morning, listening. Thank you.
